Grants and Subsidies
The uncertainties and challenges created by the decision to leave the E.U. is one that we are constantly monitoring. We provide up-to-date advice on the schemes and funding available, including the following schemes.
Basic Payment Scheme
The Basic Payment Scheme (BPS) is a subsidy that is available to farmers and landowners for keeping agricultural land in good agricultural and environmental condition. It is a complex scheme with strict deadlines and requirements, but our daily involvement with the Scheme on behalf of clients means that we are up-to-date and able to ensure that everything runs smoothly. The BPS in its current form will run until 2019. The UK government have guaranteed a scheme at current EU level until the General Election in 2022 followed by ‘transitional period’. The current deadline for annual applications under the BPS is 15th May. We can assist with:
- Annual application form;
- Trading and transfer of entitlements;
- Digital Mapping;
- Calculating and checking payments;
- Liaising with the Rural Payments Agency on your behalf.
Countryside Stewardship offers a range of environmental management agreements, from ten-year ‘Higher Tier’ agreements for environmentally important sites, to five-year ‘Mid Tier’ agreements for various farmland environments and woodland. Currently the deadline for submission of the annual claim form for an existing agreement is 15th May. New applicants must request an application pack by 31st May (and submit by 31st July) in order to create an agreement to start on the 1st January in the following year. New agreements are guaranteed post Brexit if they are accepted before 31st March 2019. There is also the Hedgerow and Stone Wall boundary grant that offers the potential for a two year agreement, based on boundary capital payments. The deadline for this scheme is 31st April in each year. We can:
- Provide advice on potential management options;
- Negotiate, complete and submit the initial application;
- Complete and submit the annual application form;
- Liaise with Natural England on your behalf.
Rural Business Grants
In 2017 DEFRA launched the latest round of rural business grants, targeting water resource management; improving forestry productivity; adding value to agri-food; and improving farm productivity. The deadline for submission of applications for such grants is 3rd December 2018.
We have providing a co-ordinating role for several different grant funding schemes in the past, and successful projects include:
- Tourist attractions and facilities;
- Farm shop;
- Open farm;
- New dairy facilities;
- Wood fuel infrastructure;
- Livestock handling and husbandry equipment.
